Bayesian Updates, False Confidence, and a Cleaner Way to Think in Ratios

Core Notes

1) Know what changed: from absolute to conditional

In practice, uncertainty questions are almost always about: _given what I observed, what should I believe now?_

Use conditional probability as default:

  • compare base rate
  • compare likelihood under each hypothesis
  • normalize

This avoids the common mistake of treating a rare event as common just because a detector has high sensitivity.

2) Use Bayes in real life, not just theory

For binary workflows (spam, alerts, triage, hiring), update posterior odds by multiplying prior odds by likelihood ratio.

If inputs are percentages, convert to probabilities and use:

P(H|E) = P(E|H) * P(H) / P(E)

This is often faster than retraining a model just to check a live decision.

3) Check concentration before trusting precision

Sample-based means can move a lot on small n.

Before trusting a result, always check:

  • sample size
  • variability
  • uncertainty interval

Confidence intervals describe repeatability over samples, not a promise about one single draw.

4) Interpret p-values correctly

A tiny p-value means the observed pattern is unusual under the null model.

It is not proof the alternative is true. Pair it with effect size and uncertainty before acting.

5) Define experiment rules before seeing outcomes

Set these first:

  • success metric
  • minimum practical effect
  • acceptable false-positive tolerance

That single step reduces post-hoc interpretation and keeps decisions repeatable.

Short worked micro-example

A monitoring model flags fraud alerts:

  • Base fraud rate P(Fraud) = 1%
  • P(Alert | Fraud) = 95%
  • P(Alert | No Fraud) = 2%

Given an account is alerted, compute P(Fraud | Alert):

P(Alert) = P(Alert|Fraud) * P(Fraud) + P(Alert|No Fraud) * P(No Fraud)

P(Alert) = 0.95 * 0.01 + 0.02 * 0.99 = 0.0293

P(Fraud|Alert) = 0.0095 / 0.0293 ≈ 32.4%

So only about one-third of alerts are real, despite high sensitivity. Operationally, combine alerts with human review or secondary checks, not full automation.

A) Subarray Sum Equals K

Problem: Given integer array nums and integer k, return number of contiguous subarrays with sum exactly k.

Hints:

  1. Use running prefix sum as you scan.
  2. For each element, find how many prior prefixes equal current_prefix - k.
  3. Keep prefix frequencies in a hash map.

Complexity: O(n) time, O(n) space.

B) Top-K Frequent Elements

Problem: Given list nums and integer k, return the k most frequent values.

Hints:

  1. Count frequencies in a hash map.
  2. Keep a min-heap of size k.
  3. Push/pop as (frequency, value) while iterating the frequency map.

Complexity: O(n log k) time, O(n) space.
